Manos Zapartas

Hi! I am Manos Zapartas (I use Emmanouil only for official purposes). I am interested in the evolution of massive stars in binary systems, focusing mostly on their explosive deaths and the produced compact remnants. The majority of massive stars are in binaries and will interact with their companion, affecting their core-collapse supernovae, and forming X-ray binary systems and potentially merging compact objects that may be observed as gravitational wave sources. Currently I study the above subjects using a combination of MESA binary stellar models and population synthesis codes, such as binary_c/nucsyn. I am member of the POSYDON collaboration (Fragos et al. 2021 (in prep.); Principal Investigators: Tassos Fragkos and Vicky Kalogera) where we are currently developing a framework for binary populations synthesis studies that use detailed stellar structure and binary evolution calculations.

I am currently a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Observatory of Geneva , in Switzerland, in the group of Tassos Fragkos. Part of my postdoctoral research is funded from the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students, through the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship (ESKAS No. 2019.0091) that was awarded to me for the academic year 2019-2020. I did my PhD at the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Selma de Mink and Alex de Koter. I am a former member of the BinCosmos group. I obtained my Degree in Physics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in July 2012 and my Master Degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Anton Pannekoek Institute in October 2014. I am originally from Alexandroupolis city in Greece.
